Studio Makeup Lab
The Makeup Labs at REDred Photo are makeup classes specifically designed to maximize hands-on practice and experimentation combined with expert education. Our Studio Makeup Labs are the perfect opportunity for aspiring or experienced makeup artists to practice makeup application and experiment with makeup styles on live models in a fun and professional studio environment.
*It is strongly recommended that the Intro to Studio Makeup class be taken prior to any labs.
Makeup Lab 1: Natural / Beauty / Portrait
Makeup lab 1 highlights subtle beauty and natural enhancement to bring the model’s individuality into prime focus. The “less is more” approach to facial styling, creating an illusion of “no makeup,” is often more difficult and takes more attention to detail than other makeup styles. Tools, technique, and knowledge of skin textures and tones are essential. We will work together to assess the skin types and tones of live models, conduct before and after shots with a standard studio set up, and amaze ourselves with the results.
Makeup Lab 2: Editorial / High Fashion
Makeup lab 2 highlights a more intense and innovative approach to beauty makeup with a strong emphasis on the overall creativity of the shot. The purpose of editorial makeup is to compliment the look and feel of the fashion or mood while drawing attention to the product or statement. The application of color theory and artistic and technical skills are essential. We will work together to assess the moods and tones of image ideas, actualize our visions by practicing on live models, conduct a stylized shot with a standard studio set up, and witness how creative makeup enhances and completes the shot.
Makeup Lab 3: Dramatic / Character / Theatrical
Makeup lab 3 covers a more dramatic blend of varied styles of makeup. Generally theatrical makeup is to be seen at a distance so application tends to be more sculpted, heavier and brighter. Stage makeup calls for more preparation and different types of products. It is important that the makeup lasts through the many changes of body temperature, scenes, and lighting. Character makeup generally requires skills with adjusting features to ensure the actor or performer “fits the role”. For this lab we will create the feel for a specific character using highlighting and contouring techniques. We will also demonstrate the effects under a basic theater lighting set up.
Makeup Lab 4: Special Effects / FX Makeup
Makeup lab 4 is a special effects lab exploring the wonders of makeup products, and the skill involved in manipulating material and light. Generally, special effects are heavily used in film and theater. However, knowledge of this craft is useful in covering tattoos or to hide heavy scarring. Due to the varied options and many uses of makeup in the special effects realm, this lab will cycle through many different focuses and themes. Each theme will be posted on the website at least 2 weeks prior to the lab scheduled.
